Come spend the morning on a hands-on visit with Aminatha! Aminatha is a member of Nyamirambo Women’s Center (NWC), a local organization that strives to empower women in the colorful Kigali neighborhood of Nyamirambo.
On this visit, you'll work alongside Aminatha to prepare several local dishes, including dodo and beans, cassava or sweet potato, with local spices used in traditional dishes. And, of course, you'll get to savor the food you prepare with Aminatha and share a morning full of conversation in Nyamirambo. You'll get to take home new recipes from your visit to Rwanda and some local spices as well! The visit includes an interpreter with high English Language proficiency.
Aminatha will head to the market early in the morning to pick out fresh ingredients. When you meet her at 10am, you'll get right to work preparing your meal. If there is time, Aminatha can take a brief walk with you through Nyamirambo, showing you where she purchases her ingredients.
You'll be provided with water, a snack, and everything you need to prepare a few traditional Rwandan dishes - food, work space, and technical guidance. You'll also get to take home small cookbook, with recipes from the food you prepared, and a sample of local spices.
Bring a camera, comfortable clothing, good will, an appetite, and a desire to learn from a great group of women!
Aminatha is in her early 40s, and has two children. Her firstborn son is a 21 year old business student and her second child is an 11 year old girl. She didn’t go to school but speaks Lingala, Swahili, Kinyarwanda and French fluently.
Aminatha grew up thinking that women don’t work, but when she started working, she felt empowered - realizing that she does not have to stay at home and that she can pay school fees for her children. She eventually started learning English and continues to learn today.
