Serge is one of the nicest people you will meet in Rwanda! He's a very talented Kigali based artist who sells his work around Kigali and is often commissioned to produce pieces for visiting dignitaries and their families. In fact, he's trained some of the other talented artists also featured on Vayando. Since no trip to Rwanda is complete without visiting artists and seeing the capital, come spend a few hours with Serge exploring the back alley's of Nyamirambo - Kigali's famously most lively neighborhood - meeting people and finding a great spot to set up your canvas and paint the cityscape or a local scene using acrylics.
On the three hour visit, you'll get to learn about Serge's work, visit his home studio, see a unique side of the city, and take home a small painting (up to 20cm x 30cm) that he will help you co-create!
"Come visit Nyamirambo up close and personal! I love teaching people how to paint, and I'm excited for people to explore my neighborhood through art!"
Serge started drawing as a young boy in Rubavu, Rwanda, but didn't focus on his talent until he was in high school. He studied art at Nyundo art school in Rwanda's Western province. After school he came to Kigali to focus on his art. He finished school in 2009 and has been painting full time since. He currently has 4 students in a small academy he runs out of his home. He has trained about 10 students, many of whom have moved on to focus on their own work. Serge works out of his home and paints everyday from about 7am to 4pm. Serge's dream in to build an art academy, training many students and have his own gallery in downtown Kigali. He also wants to one day meet Barack Obama, the focus of one of his favorite pieces. He likes meeting people from other countries for new ideas and inspiration!
Serge's work has been featured at Shami Art Gallery in Kimihurura in Kigali and other locations around the country. His clients are mostly international travelers, but he also sells commissioned pieces for hotels and lodges, both internationally and abroad. He was selected to produce several pieces for British barrister - and Tony' Blaire's wife - Cherie Blair.
He paints with oil and acrylic paints, while some of his students focus on pen sketching and sculpture on wood. One of his specialties is to paint gorillas and he was commissioned to produce a large installation for the lodge at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, a sculptured piece on wood for a church in Musambira in Southern Province, Rwanda, and more!
