Freddy will welcome you to his quiet, vibrantly green farm with a short description about how his little pigs grow. He will show you their local grub: filipita bananas, yuca and palm fruit. He will then show you how to care for them. Feel free to give them a bath or just toss them some bananas. Then follow Freddy over to the biodigestor, where the pig waste gets turned into natural gas to light the stove in Freddy's kitchen. This type of farming produces little to no waste and contamination. Freddy takes pride in this.
Afterwards, Freddy's mom will welcome you into her quaint kitchen where you can have a snack, coffee, fresh bread or a fruit drink.
"We all work together. If I cannot be here, my mother or father help care for the pigs."
Freddy was raised on his family farm in Rancho Quemado. While agriculture is his primary interest, he has to find informal jobs to supplement his income. His family-run pig farm supplements his work in construction, repairing motorcycles and selling palm fruit to the palm oil companies. These jobs are not reliable on their own, but together Freddy is able to diversify his work to find stability.
Freddy has always been dedicated to agriculture, beginning with cattle farming. However, it was a struggle for him to live off of farming alone as you can see from the long list of side jobs. Freddy became interested in permaculture after learning about it in a book and invested in a family-run pig farm. The pigs provide a way to have sustainable and natural gas in the kitchen. The pig excrement is converted into energy through a biodigestor. Additionally, the pigs provide meat and help sustain the organic compost.
